Own a piece of a special chapter in Porsche history.
When asked to call a Porsche a car, you’d be forgiven for thinking of the 911. It’s one of the most ubiquitous cars of all time, and more than 60 years later, it’s certainly one of the greatest sports cars of all time. However, Porsche’s 75-year history has seen many icons alongside the 911, including mid-engined and even front-engined supercars, and when those cars, considered excellent in their own right, bear the same name as the mighty 911, they don’t… You are appreciated. .
The transmission era at Porsche was marked by a host of front-engined Porsche sports cars that have since become iconic classics, and although of course they are almost as unrecognizable as the 911, Porsche’s transmission models featured innovations and breakthroughs that were integral to Manufacturer’s position. As one of the stalwarts of performance engineering, cars from this era capture a period of Porsche history through ambitious experimentation. Now, they have become treasured classics that should have a place in any Porsche enthusiast or collector’s garage. View a selection of Porsche Transmission vehicles for sale below.
What is a transmission?
“Transmission” is a term used to describe a vehicle in which the transmission is combined with the axle. In the case of transmission-shifted Porsche models, this meant that the engine was in the front, and the transmission in the rear. This has helped improve weight distribution and provides superior handling as a result. At the time Porsche introduced its paddle-shift sports cars in 1976, the concept was new.
Other cars that have used the transmissions include the Aston Martin DB9, Chevrolet Corvette, Maserati GranTurismo, Alfa Romeo 8C, Nissan GT-R, Lexus LFA, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Ferrari California, and many others.
What are the Porsche transmission models?
The front-engined, rear-wheel drive models that defined Porsche’s “transmission era” were the 924, 928, 944 and 968.
924 (1976-1988)
This was Porsche’s first front-engined sports car, introduced in 1976. It began life as a VW project, which was developed and then canceled in light of the oil crisis of the early 1970s. Porsche then purchased the rights to the new sports car in late 1974, then continued to put it on the market for the 1976 model year.
The car featured a four-cylinder engine, the first water-cooled engine used by Porsche in a road car, and with a spacious interior, it was praised as a “family sports station wagon”.
928 (1977-1995)
Just one year after the introduction of the 924, Porsche introduced the 928 with a V8 engine. It had supercar performance for its time and was still a practical and usable car. In production for nearly 20 years, the Porsche 928 was revolutionary.
944 (1982-1991)
Porsche’s second four-cylinder transmission model was the 944, which developed the 924 formula with a relatively fuel-efficient powertrain that was also offered as a cabriolet model.
968 (1991-1995)
Besides the 928, Porsche’s last inline-drive transmission model was the 968, which succeeded the 944 as a four-cylinder model. Introduced as a coupe and cabriolet, it was the final development of Porsche’s interesting ‘transmission era’. Porsche would not build another front-engined car until after the Cayenne was introduced in 2003.
