The top five best-selling midsize SUVs of 2024

Mid-sized SUVs have long been the most popular type of new car in Australia, last year achieving more than 80,000 sales more than the next largest market segment, 4×4 unit.

SUVs overall found a total of 704,557 new homes in 2024, a market share of 56.9 percent, of which midsize SUVs accounted for the bulk with sales of 287,637.

This subcategory alone enjoyed a year-on-year sales increase of 7.2 percent compared to 2023, making it one of the fastest growing segments, while sales of SUVs and large SUVs declined.

With that in mind, we turned to the VFACTS sales charts to analyze the top five best-selling midsize SUVs of 2024.

Our previous VFACTS coverage has identified the top categories, but this list aims to provide a slightly more detailed analysis for those considering such a vehicle.

We’ve also provided links to reviews of the top-rated versions of each model tested by CarExpert Team throughout the year.

Toyota Rav4

Ranking second overall behind the Ford Ranger, the Toyota RAV4 had an exceptionally strong year on the Australian sales charts in 2024, when it achieved 58,718 deliveries.

Compared to 2023, it has seen a 98.2 per cent increase in sales, helping it overtake the evergreen HiLux ute to become Toyota’s best-selling vehicle for the first time ever, as well as Australia’s and Toyota’s best-selling SUV (and of course mid-year). SUV size).

The fifth generation of the RAV4 range, launched in May 2019, is powered exclusively by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that includes a CVT automatic transmission, with front- or all-wheel-drive layouts and a fuel economy of 4.7 l/100 km and 4.8 l/100 km. The RAV4 is available in nine variants, and ranges in price from $42,260 to $58,360 before on-road costs.

All models come with a five-star ANCAP safety rating based on tests carried out in 2019, and are backed by Toyota’s five-year, unlimited kilometer warranty.

Our highest-scoring RAV4 last year was the range-topping Edge Hybrid, which received an 8.3/10 from Jack Quick in August.

Mitsubishi Outlander

The last car to make the top five in Australia in 2024 was the Mitsubishi Outlander, which saw year-on-year sales increase by 13.8 per cent to end with 27,613 deliveries for the year.

As the second best-selling model in the midsize SUV segment, the Outlander is also among the most configurable models. With prices ranging from $37,740 to $73,790 before on-roads, you can buy it as a five- or seven-seater, with front- or all-wheel drive, and with plug-in hybrid power (PHEV).

Non-hybrid models are equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, while the 2.4-litre four-cylinder PHEV powertrain delivers enhanced output and better fuel efficiency. All engines send power to the wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

The range is covered by Mitsubishi’s 10-year, 200,000km conditional warranty, while PHEV models are covered for eight years or 160,000km. The fourth generation Outlander was launched here in November 2021 and received a five-star ANCAP safety rating based on tests carried out in 2022.

Topping Car experts Our 2024 Outlander reviews were the Exceed Tourer, which sits one rung below the GSR PHEV at the top of the range. It was rated 8.2/10 by James Wong in July.

Mazda CX-5

Coming in eighth overall and third in the segment is the Mazda CX-5, which ended the year down 1.1 per cent from 2023 but still with a respectable 22,835 deliveries, despite the second-generation model dating back to March 2017 in Australia.

Three four-cylinder gasoline engines are available in the CX-5’s eight-grade range: 2.0 and 2.5-litre naturally aspirated, and 2.5-litre turbocharged. Each engine has more power than the one before, although that comes at the cost of fuel efficiency.

Both 2.5-liter engines can be optioned with all-wheel drive, while the 2.0-liter engine is reserved for the base-spec CX-5 and is only available with front-wheel drive. All variants use a six-speed automatic transmission, while the range ranges in price from $36,590 to $55,000 before on-road costs.

Mazda is backing its CX-5 with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, although it still won’t have an ANCAP safety score after its rating expires at the end of 2023.

Two CX-5 reviews shared the same 2024 high of 7.7/10. One was the CX-5 G25 Touring reviewed by Jack Quick in April, and the other was the top-spec CX-5 G35 Akera reviewed by James Wong in October.

Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage ranked 10th overall in terms of sales in 2024, and with 22,210 total deliveries for the year, it was the fourth best-selling midsize SUV, just behind the CX-5.

The Sportage is available with four different engines – including the hybrid that arrived earlier last year – and is priced from $32,995 to $55,420 before on-road costs, and uniquely pairs with a six-speed manual transmission in the base Sportage S model.

Other available transmissions include a six-speed automatic, an eight-speed automatic, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, with the hybrid getting the highest power output and best fuel efficiency.

All Kia models have a seven-year, unlimited kilometer warranty, and the Sportage comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating based on tests carried out in 2022.

The Sportage arrived here in fifth-generation guise in November 2021, and received a maximum rating of 8.2/10 for 2024 in a review published by James Wong in October, which focused on the SUV’s newly added hybrid variants.

Rounding out the list is the Hyundai Tucson, which achieved 19,061 deliveries in 2024 to make it the 12th best-selling car in Australia overall. The fourth generation of the Kia Sportage’s sister model was released in May 2021, and was the fifth most popular medium SUV last year.

The Tucson ranges in price from $39,100 to $61,100 before on-road costs, and is available with three engines and five drivetrains. These engines include a non-turbocharged engine and two turbocharged engines, the latter of which is also offered with hybrid technology, while front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available depending on the model.

Like all its rivals except the Sportage, the full range is automatic only, with the typical torque converter fitted exclusively to all models except those with the non-hybrid turbocharged engine, which feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Hyundai backs the Tucson range with a five-year, unlimited kilometer warranty, and the range comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating based on tests carried out in 2021.
