On Friday, Lotus announced plans to lay off up to 270 people across the Heathyl manufacturing facility, BBC Reports. The company cited “the volatile and advanced market conditions, including American definitions.”
Workers’ layoffs come six months after the company warned that media jobs may be in danger. Lotus recorded a $ 200 million loss during the first half of 2024, and despite sales gains, profitability fought to match a pace.
In a statement to BBCLotus says she plans to work closely with the Chinese parent company Geely in the future, although the brand says it is still committed to the United Kingdom. This is the full statement:
“Lotus cars announced the restructuring of proposed business to ensure sustainable operations, amid advanced and advanced market conditions, including American definitions and changing demand for consumers on sports cars.
“The company plans to increase the wider Lotus brand and its largest partner for shareholders and technology, Geely Holding Group.
“He will look to increase resource and cooperation in technology, engineering and operations.”
Lotus has a problem that is fold. The first is the two EVS, Electre and Emeya. The demand for cars has decreased like this, leaving a smaller gathering than Jupiter. And whether we are talking about performance or scope, it is not competitive. So potential potential buyers will choose something else.
The next is a Trump tariff. The United States is one of the most important Lotus markets, and to this writing, a 25 percent tariff is imposed on all vehicles imported from the United Kingdom, as the company brings its sports car Emira. Two EVS are assembled in Wuhan, China, where the United States currently receives a 145 percent tax on imports. As of this week, the car maker stopped all shipments to the United States indefinitely.
These definitions are likely to eat the little margin of the profit produced by these cars, explaining the demobilization of workers and restructuring. This leaves only a little hope in replacing the next ELISE in Lotus, type 135. This car was assumed to appear originally in 2027, although its future was not clear now.
Lots, like many British car makers, are routinely suffering with decades -troubled battles with profitability. Let’s hope that the company will get out of this alive.
