Circle return: NIGERIA, Rwanda & SA Race to Revive F1

For the first time after thirty years since Formula hosts in Africa, nations are racing to host the Formula 1 Grands race again. Nigeria, South Africa and Rwanda launched their offers to bring F1 races to the continent. Officials emphasize that efforts are more than just sports ambitions, and are seen as an incentive for tourism, infrastructure promotions, youth participation, empowerment and economic growth. Such an event would put African cities on the map of global motorsport and can inspire a new generation of fans and drivers.

Nigeria has officially entered the race to host the F1 Grand Prix. On July 24, 2025, the country’s national sports committee announced an attempt by a circle designed for this purpose in Abuja, which would make Nigeria the first African country to organize a tour of the World Championship since South Africa in 1993. The offer is in line with the President’s Renewable initiative of President Tinopo Al -Amal, with the aim of opening investment and benefiting from Nigeria’s position as the largest economy in Africa for this international scene.

South Africa also returns the F1. In the historic Kyalami race track, Toby Vinci announced that FIA has agreed to the first -class upgrade plans. “Today, we are converting the page into a bold new chapter for Kyalami. We are ready to return the formula to Africa.”

Planned improvements-expansion of procedural flow areas and upgrade barriers, fencing and drainage-floor technically but necessary for F1 standards. Once finished, Kyalami will be the only FIA race in Africa. (The circuit, which is 4.5 km long, has a floors, as it hosted 21 Grands Prix, the last of which was in 1993.) South African officials hope that this renewal could be able to put the country again on the world race.
