Ram is killing it with its 500-mile electric minivan

The all-electric Ram 1500 REV is still in production, but it won’t have a 500-mile range as originally promised. There’s no design flaw or battery issue causing problems, at least none that I’m aware of. Ram simply decided not to build the long-range model.

According to a company memo leaked by “reliable sources.” Mopar Insiders. According to the report, Stellantis is advising suppliers to suspend all work on the Ram 1500 BEV XL, which would have had a massive 229.0 kWh battery. Thus, the half-ton pickup truck is equipped with a range of up to 500 miles between charges. However, there was a real cost to this ability. The battery pack alone costs $26,000.

The memo did not give a specific reason for canceling the long-range truck. In an email to Engine1Stellantis pointed us to the December announcement regarding prioritization of the range-extending Ramcharger hybrid over the Ram 1500 REV. Beyond that, there’s no official word on the long-range electric truck.

There’s certainly all kinds of uncertainty in the auto market right now, especially when it comes to electric vehicles. Carlos Tavares, former CEO of Stellantis, has been pushing toward an electric future for all brands within the company, including Ram. Before his departure in December, Ram had already postponed both the 1500 REV and Ramcharger until later in 2025. About two weeks after his resignation, Ram announced that the REV would be postponed to 2026 and the Ramcharger hybrid would arrive first.

At this time, plans for the standard range for the Ram 1500 REV appear to have not changed. It should be noted that the large STLA platform on which the electric truck rides is actually designed to accommodate the large battery pack. This means that the long-range version could easily appear again if Ram sees demand for it in the future.
